Optimizing Catamaran Tunnel Design with V-Groove Scrim Board PVC Foam

Introduction

V-groove Scrim Board PVC Foam excels in concave/convex tunnel applications

Catamaran hulls rely on their twin-hull configuration for exceptional water stability. These hulls demand lightweight yet robust materials like fiberglass or aluminum to withstand marine conditions. The tunnel connecting these hulls is critical - proper design enhances sailing speed while ensuring structural integrity.

V-Groove Scrim Board PVC Foam is an ideal material for catamaran tunnels due to its lightweight, high strength, and ability to conform to complex concave/convex shapes. As a leading PVC Foam Board Manufacturer, UNION COMPOSITES provides custom-engineered solutions for marine applications.

Why Use V-Groove Scrim Board PVC Foam for Catamaran Tunnels?

Lightweight & Strong – Reduces overall vessel weight while maintaining structural integrity.
Waterproof & Corrosion-Resistant – Withstands marine environments, unlike traditional wood.
Resin Efficiency – Optimized groove design minimizes resin usage, cutting material costs.
Customizable – CNC-machined to exact specifications for seamless integration.

How UNION Designs V-Groove Scrim Board for Catamarans

Step 1: Calculating the V-Groove Angle

To ensure a precise fit, our engineers use mathematical modeling based on Vertical Diameter Theorem and customer-provided dimensions:

Calculating the V-Groove Angle Technical Diagrams

Technical Diagrams

· CE = 493mm, AB = 826mm, Major Arc (ACB) = 1700mm

· Formula: AO(r)2 = AE2 + OE2 = 4132 + (493 - r)2

· Result: Radius (r) = 419mm

· Groove Angle Calculation:

n = 216° (using r = L * 180 / n * π)

With a 5cm groove spacing, we determined 33 grooves are needed.

Final V-Groove Angle = 6°

Solution: We used 6° CNC blades to produce the perfect V-groove profile.

Step 2: Optimizing Resin Usage with Scrim Board

Many customers use standard scrim boards on convex surfaces (Pic 1), leading to excessive resin consumption.

At UNION, we recommend an improved method (Pic 2) where:

· One side of the grid adheres closely to the hull.

· The V-groove adjusts dynamically, reducing resin flow.

Result:

40% less resin used (confirmed by customer feedback).
Stronger bond & weight savings.
